Inflatables 101
Lance Walters, Associate Professor, UHM School of Architecture
Not all buildings have hard or straight walls. Not all architecture is about a form or shape. Some of it is soft, fun and quick to make. Learn about inflatable architecture and see some of the many inflatable spaces that architecture students at UH School of Architecture have built. Plus, get instructions on how to make and inflate your own!
Session 2: Thursday October 8, 2020
Designing with Light & Shadow
Ana Molinar-Ruiz, WhiteSpace Architects
As architects we design with many elements you can touch - like walls, floors, and ceilings. But did you know that we also design with elements that you cannot touch? Light & shadow are some of the most important elements architects have to think about. If ignored in design, spaces can end up extremely uncomfortable; but when done right they help create beautiful spaces. In this session we will look at some creative examples of light & shadow in design, and then explore ourselves with a fun activity!
Session 3: Tuesday October 13, 2020
Design Communication
Lisa Nguyen, Peter Vincent Architects & Duane Uchida, Bluestone Management
Design communication is how we describe and understand the goals of our projects. This session focuses on how to effectively communicate both what we want to see in a design and also how to understand the needs of the designs we create.
Session 4: Thursday October 15, 2020
Designing for Ghouls 'n Goblins - Through the Eyes & Minds of Architects
Julie Lam, Design Partners Incorporated
One of the most important concepts designers learn in architecture school is Figure-Ground. It impacts our design, throughout school and during our transition to work, and long into our careers as architects. This session will focus on a few key concepts about figure-ground and then we will break out to apply these ideas to each of our own Halloween themed assignments.
Session 5: Tuesday October 20, 2020
Hale Ola ‘Alua: A Center for Community Health
Jason Takeuchi, Architect, Ferraro Choi & Associates

Surprises in Architecture
Mary Rose Cacchione, Peter Vincent Architects
In this session we’ll discuss residential design as an opportunity to introduce fun, surprises, and unexpected elements into daily life. We’ll present different types of living environments and challenge students to consider what home means in an open-ended, non-traditional way.
Session 7: Tuesday October 27, 2020
Who Designs Hawaiʻi? YOU DO!
Steve Hill & Keola Annino, UHM School of Architecture
Ever wonder how designers take an idea from their mind’s eye and make it into something we can use in the real world? Follow the journey as students at the UHM School of Architecture design and build one- of-a-kind furniture for their families and themselves. Along the way we will focus on the process of thinking about a design problem and finding a good solution by using hands-on model making. In this way, you can design cool stuff that will make you happy – and you don’t even need a computer!
Session 8: Thursday October 29, 2020
